How soda compares to coffee and tea

The FDA lists these typical amounts per 12 fl oz (FDA: Spilling the Beans):

The same FDA page says that for most adults, 400 mg a day is an amount not generally associated with negative effects, and that sensitivity varies a lot from person to person. It also says that if you drink caffeine every day and want to cut back, it is best to do it gradually.

Quitting soda without a caffeine crash

Quitting soda and quitting caffeine are two separate choices. If your usual can had caffeine, many people find it easier to keep some caffeine from unsweetened tea or coffee while they drop the soda, then decide about caffeine later.

MedlinePlus notes that stopping caffeine suddenly can bring withdrawal symptoms such as headache, drowsiness, and irritability for some people (MedlinePlus: Caffeine). The soda withdrawal timeline describes what many people report in the first days.

Diet soda is worth a look here. Diet Coke has more caffeine per can (46 mg) than Coca-Cola Original (34 mg), so someone switching from diet soda to plain sparkling water may notice the caffeine change more than they expected.
