Diet Coke withdrawal: symptoms and how to taper
Diet Coke has no sugar, but it does have caffeine, and a daily habit that goes with it. Here is what to expect when you stop and a simple way to taper.
Not medical advice. QuitSoda is habit support for adults. If caffeine, sugar, pregnancy, medicines, or a health condition affect your plan, ask your clinician.
Short answer: A 12 oz can of Diet Coke has 46 mg of caffeine, according to Coca-Cola US, so stopping suddenly after a daily habit can bring caffeine withdrawal symptoms such as headache, drowsiness, and irritability. NIH puts onset at 12 to 24 hours, a peak at 20 to 51 hours, and 2 to 9 days in total. The FDA says it is best to cut back on caffeine gradually, so a taper is the usual choice.
What is in a can of Diet Coke
| Drink | Calories | Sugar | Caffeine |
|---|---|---|---|
| Diet Coke | 0 | 0 g | 46 mg |
| Coca-Cola Zero Sugar | 0 | 0 g | 34 mg |
| Coca-Cola Original | 140 | 39 g | 34 mg |
Diet Coke has the most caffeine of the three. Someone who goes from Diet Coke to plain sparkling water drops 46 mg for every can they used to drink, which is more than they would from regular Coke. Diet soda still counts as soda on the free 30-day challenge, so the plan here heads toward unsweetened drinks.
Symptoms the health sources list
If you have been drinking Diet Coke every day and you stop suddenly, you may notice some of the usual caffeine withdrawal symptoms:
- MedlinePlus lists headaches, drowsiness, irritability, nausea, and trouble concentrating.
- Mayo Clinic lists headaches, tiredness, crankiness, and trouble focusing.
- NIH News in Health mentions headaches and increased sleepiness.
Not everything you feel is caffeine. The urge for a can at the same time every day usually follows your routine, such as after lunch or on the drive home, not the caffeine clock. Both can be happening at once, and they need different fixes. The routine needs a replacement. The caffeine needs a slower drop. See soda cravings for the routine side.
How long Diet Coke withdrawal can last
The StatPearls review from NIH gives the caffeine withdrawal timeline as onset within 12 to 24 hours, a peak at 20 to 51 hours, and 2 to 9 days in total. MedlinePlus says symptoms usually go away after a couple of days, and Mayo Clinic says they are most often mild and get better after a few days. These are rough ranges, and you may feel different.
If a headache is the main worry, read headache after quitting soda. For the longer view, see the quitting soda timeline.
How to taper off Diet Coke
The FDA says that if you are used to drinking caffeine every day and want to cut back, it is best to do so gradually. Here is an example for someone at four 12 oz cans a day. The numbers are just 46 mg times the number of cans, and they leave out any other caffeine you get.
| Cans a day | Caffeine from Diet Coke |
|---|---|
| 4 | 184 mg |
| 3 | 138 mg |
| 2 | 92 mg |
| 1 | 46 mg |
| 0 | 0 mg |
- Count your cans for three days and write down the time and place for each.
- Hold each level for a few days, then drop one more. Cut the easiest can first and save the hardest for last.
- Put an unsweetened drink in every slot you drop, before you get there.
- If you want to keep some caffeine for now, unsweetened tea or coffee can do it. The FDA lists about 37 mg in a 12 oz green tea and about 71 mg in black tea. You can taper that later.
- Plain sparkling water or seltzer, very cold, with a squeeze of fresh lemon or lime at home if you like.
- Unsweetened iced or hot tea, black or green.
- Unsweetened coffee, if the can was mostly about caffeine.
- Still water in a bottle you like, kept where the can used to sit.
Prefer a quit date? Cold turkey vs cutting back compares both paths. The full taper plan is in how to cut back on soda.
What about the sweeteners?
Some people wonder if the sweeteners are part of withdrawal. This page does not make that claim either way. The withdrawal pattern in the sources above is about caffeine. If you have questions about sweeteners, start with what the FDA says in Aspartame and Other Sweeteners in Food. For the full list of drinks that fit the challenge, see alternatives to Diet Coke.
